Placement at City Graphics

After showing my portfolio to Ayden, he asked if I would like to come and spend a few days with him the following week. Obviously I was more than happy to go.

The studio is really nice. Consists of 4 designers and a copywriter so fairly small. I was really looking forward to it.

The small set up really worked to my advantage - I was able to get quite a bit of attention and everyone was more than happy to answer my questions.

The first day I was given the brief of character design for a sponsored bike ride taking place in Lincolnshire. I must admit, I was quite disappointed. I thought after Ayden had seen my portfolio he would see the type of work that I was experienced in. I really did feel quite uncomfortable, but gave it a go.

I spent a good half day on it and came up with something that Ayden seemed quite happy with. I was told to leave it and that someone would pick it up the next day to make final amendments.

After talking to the designers, I soon began to realise that this was a regular occurrence - no body had any specific area of work that they did, everyone did everything. I spoke to Ayden about this and he obviously believed that this is how it should be, that there shouldn't be any specialisms.

This definitely isn't a position I would like to be in again. In the future I would like to experience working in a more specialised agency.
